VCA ART 2022

Fern Cook

Graduate Certificate of Visual Art

Artmaking is a joyful and inevitable mode of my existence. Through it, some of life’s fleeting realities and fantasies (daydreams, feelings, conversations, friendships, colours, songs) are chronicled and felt.

My process involves channelling spontaneous artistic impulses and lived experiences into ongoing material experimentation. My days are made up of a work as it evolves; materials moving around with me, coming alive. A piece is finished when it has become something visceral to be encountered.

Land Of Make Believe is an immersive cubbyhouse artwork that invites the viewer into a lamp-lit, blanketed floorspace beneath an illustrated bedsheet. A drawing-based, soft-sculptural and multimedia installation, this work embodies the playful and whimsical elements of my visual style and my sensory, world-building approach to making art.
