VCA ART 2022

Isobel Goodman

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drawing & Printmaking)

My work explores the unusual sensitivity I experience as result of having Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). This condition makes it difficult to understand, hear and converse with people and importantly, to comprehend how they are feeling. This often leads to a feeling of disconnection and separation from those around me. For my wall prints, I developed the ‘ear shape’ to emulate my experience of APD and the misinterpretations the condition engenders. My work incorporates edited soundscapes that layer the multiple simultaneous auditory inputs I experience. I use screen-printing to emphasise static texture as a visual representation of the garbled communication that I often experience.

Mural 6: The garbled conversation between me and the train, acrylic wall paint with silk-screen ink printed on plaster wall. Paired with 2 channel digital audio soundscape, dimensions variable, 2022. Documentation by SLACK.

This work is representative of Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) in a public environment. Viewers are invited to enter the installation and listen to the experience of what its like to have APD.
