VCA ART 2022

Kate Murrell

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drawing & Printmaking)

This artwork contains sensitive imagery relating to religious groups.

My practice grapples with nihilism in the current political and social climate, moving between an unbounded realm of antagonism, antipathy and the non-real. My work portrays a cognitive dissonance that employs the paradox of existentialism, using printmaking and mixed media to relay the nuances of my own experience. Across my practice, I explore the space between the emphatic and the serene through a destructive and liberating abstracted process whereby I decipher ‘sense’ literally and figuratively. A subversive juxtaposition of dark, incongruous humour comes from the process of deconstructing the world around me with a combination of art historical and religious iconography.
