Brienna Heath

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting)

African-American and Anglo-Australian textile artist and painter Brie Heath (they/she) questions the reality of being a young adult; regarding the confusion of leaving childhood while simultaneously having to navigate the world. They explore themes such as racial and gender identity, loneliness and communication while reminiscing on childhood through the use of funky coloured and plush shapes.

Heath's graduate work A Bit On The Nose (2022) explores the commodification of Blackness through the use of Black-centric features, specifically the nose. The colossal sized sculpture physically centres blackness in the colonial space of the university, mirroring the space Heath inadvertently took up as part of the very small percentage of black individuals moving within a white institution.
