Hannah Pettersen-Giannopoulos

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting)

I am a painter and printmaker working with themes of the taboo. Ideas about disgust and repulsion are commonly seen and disguised within my work through colourful and sometimes challenging imagery.

Additionally, themes of humour and the banal within suburban living have also emerged from my practice since the arrival of Covid-19 – manifesting in a quest to highlight the absurdity in the derelict. Though visual styles and themes interchange, the static concept of a push–pull within the grotesque is fundamental and consistent.

I recall being interested in unconventional toys, films, and music as a child – leaning into topics such as horror, gore and heavier styles of music. It’s important to portray such imagery to raise the question: What is the true difference between the visually inviting and the uninviting in art?
