Sophia Cleaver

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting)

Through the mediums of painting and sculpture, I delve into psychological spaces with reference to horror archetypes and corporeal gore.

With oil paint, I create hypnotic abstractions of flesh to simultaneously intrigue and repulse my audience, questioning our relationships to our bodies and the world around us. Additionally, I present recognisable and loaded subject matter with a psychosexual duality, with the visceral nature of flesh and meat mirrored through my application of oil paint.

In my sculptural practise, I depict tentacular forms as a manifestation of psychological repression. Through various mediums and architectural engagement, I portray the obtrusion of liminal space. By creating ambiguous forms that engage with materiality, I am referencing human form and the natural world, bringing both together.
